Altaf Hussain, once widely known
as a tyrant and ruthless party leader of MQM. Who, presently, is in troubled
waters and under scrutiny, not just by his home country but also in United
Kingdom on charges of murder, money laundering and hate speeches against people
of Pakistan. His reign has been weakened and on downward spiral for some years
now. But it seems that his end days as a tyrant are nearer than ever.
He once was a voice for Muhajirs’
rights in Sindh Province of Pakistan but as he grew in political stature, his
lust for power grew manifold and once he saw it coming his way, he fed his lust
for power with terror and intimidation. There was time when he was undeclared Monarch
of Karachi, financial hub and largest city of Pakistan. Nothing happened
without his consent and will. He did not only just grew in power but also
financially; exponentially. And where this revenue was being generated; his
party allegedly terrorized and intimidated local businessmen to give money in
the name of party fund, "zakat" and “Sadaqha”. Now it seems very
legitimate to collect funds for political purposes through those means. But if
you read the stories continuously published in newspapers and other media as to
how and through which means MQM collected wealth through the years. You would
be shocked. He is even alleged to have received funds from Indian Intelligence
agency to destabilize Pakistan.
In 1992, then government of Benazir
Bhutto, decided to take action against him. His party was decimated, he himself
fled to UK just before the operation against his party was started.
He did not give up and controlled
his party through his party confidants, who remained in Pakistan, and built the
party again. This time focusing more on politics for some time rather than the past
tactics. As soon as he got a foothold in political system in Karachi, he
reverted to his old methods of terror and intimidation, managing everything
remotely from UK.
This was the history of Altaf
Hussain. Why write his history and biography when he is a well-known figure? Well!
I just wanted to remind myself of who he was so that I can compare him what he
is today; how tides are turned.
In recent months, Pakistan
military and civilian government started a decisive action against him and his
party. Most of his confidants are on the either arrested, on the run or fled to
other countries. He himself is being questioned in UK for money laundering,
murder and hate speeches.
Today he is no more than a joker,
who even does not know how to Joker. His political statements are regarded as
idiotic, senseless and stupidly insane. He is becoming nobody. He announces
something and then retracts and announces it again and retracts and it has been
going on and on for some time now. Just today he has announced hunger strike
till his death in the name of Muhajirs rights. This is biggest joke of them all.
I am sure either he will retract again or would not even do it coming up with
yet another idiotic excuse. Time will tell and I shall update my blog entry in
coming days.
The thing is, I do understand the
quest of power, but what I don’t understand is why one should use immoral, inhuman,
criminal and unjust means to step up the ladder. I see Nelson Mandela, I see
Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and I even see Gandhi, who raised to power mainly through
peaceful struggle.
Power is a weird thing, when it
is abused, it is root cause of all the evil not just towards others but to one
himself.
